Sweet birch (Betula lenta), also known as black birch or cherry birch, is a deciduous tree native to eastern North America. It's readily identifiable by its smooth, reddish-brown bark when young, which develops characteristic dark, platy ridges as it matures. The leaves are alternate, simple, ovate, and sharply serrated. A key identifying feature is the wintergreen aroma released when twigs or bark are scratched or broken; this is due to the presence of methyl salicylate.

Sweet birch has a history of traditional medicinal use, primarily due to its methyl salicylate content, a natural form of aspirin. Native American tribes, and later settlers, utilized various parts of the tree for different ailments.

Historically it was used as an:

  • Analgesic: The oil extracted from the bark was applied topically to relieve muscle aches, joint pain, and headaches.
  • Antipyretic: Used to reduce fever.
  • Antiseptic: Applied to minor cuts and wounds.
  • Diuretic: To promote urine production.

Important Note: While sweet birch has a history of medicinal use, it's crucial to exercise caution. Methyl salicylate is toxic in high doses, and internal use should be avoided without proper guidance from a qualified healthcare practitioner. It should also be avoided by individuals who are allergic to aspirin or salicylates, those with bleeding disorders, and during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
