The nettle, primarily Urtica dioica (stinging nettle), is a herbaceous perennial flowering plant in the family Urticaceae. Native to Europe, Asia, North Africa, and North America, it is well-known for the stinging hairs (trichomes) on its leaves and stems. These hairs contain histamine and other chemicals that cause a painful sting upon contact.
Nettle has a long history of medicinal use. Traditionally, it has been used as a diuretic to help the body get rid of excess water and salt.
