The nettle, primarily Urtica dioica (stinging nettle), is a herbaceous perennial flowering plant in the family Urticaceae. Native to Europe, Asia, North Africa, and North America, it is well-known for the stinging hairs (trichomes) on its leaves and stems. These hairs contain histamine and other chemicals that cause a painful sting upon contact.

Nettle has a long history of medicinal use. Traditionally, it has been used as a diuretic to help the body get rid of excess water and salt. It's also been employed for its anti-inflammatory properties, particularly in treating arthritis and joint pain. Some studies suggest nettle can help alleviate allergy symptoms, such as hay fever, by reducing histamine production. Furthermore, it's been used topically to treat skin ailments like eczema and rashes.

In modern herbal medicine, nettle root extract is often used to manage the symptoms of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), a condition involving an enlarged prostate gland. Research indicates that nettle may help improve urinary flow and reduce the frequency of nighttime urination. Additionally, some studies suggest nettle can aid in blood sugar regulation. Nettle leaves are also a rich source of vitamins (A, C, K) and minerals (iron, calcium, magnesium), making them a nutritious addition to the diet.
